Job Summary:
The Forensic Ballistics Expert is responsible for conducting detailed investigations and analysis of firearms, ammunition, and related evidence within the field of forensic ballistics. The expert will utilize specialized knowledge and skills to examine and interpret ballistic evidence, provide expert testimony in legal proceedings, and contribute to the resolution of criminal investigations.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive examinations of firearms, ammunition, and related evidence to determine the type, make, and model, as well as potential links to specific crimes.
- Perform microscopic analysis of bullet casings, projectiles, and other ballistic evidence using specialized equipment and techniques.
- Utilize advanced technologies, such as comparison microscopes and digital imaging systems, to identify unique markings, toolmarks, and other forensic characteristics on firearms and ammunition.
- Conduct in-depth research and analysis to determine the origin, manufacturing process, and history of firearms and ammunition.
- Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, legal professionals, and other forensic experts to provide expert opinions and advice regarding ballistic evidence.
- Prepare detailed reports documenting examination results, findings, and conclusions, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to established protocols.
- Provide expert testimony in court proceedings, presenting complex scientific findings and explaining technical concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
- Stay abreast of advancements in forensic ballistics, firearms technology, and related fields through continuous professional development and training.
- Maintain accurate and organized case records, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to legal and ethical standards.
- Assist in the training and mentoring of junior forensic staff, sharing expertise and knowledge to enhance overall team capabilities.
- Adhere to established quality control and quality assurance protocols to ensure accuracy, reliability, and validity of examination results.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Criminalistics, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum of [X] years of experience as a Forensic Ballistics Expert or similar role in a recognized forensic laboratory or law enforcement agency.
- In-depth knowledge of firearms, ammunition, and ballistics principles, including the ability to identify and interpret markings, toolmarks, and other forensic evidence.
